Influence of the alcohol and water grades on surfactant-free colloidal syntheses of gold nanoparticles in alkaline water-alcohol mixtures

AbstractTo make the most of the unique properties of nanomaterials, and to bridge the gap between fundamental and applied research, controlled, green, cheap and energy efficient syntheses of nanoparticles are required. In this respect, room and low temperature surfactant-free colloidal syntheses of nanoparticles obtained in low viscosity and low boiling point solvents, without additives or nature-derived extracts, are promising to develop more active (electro)catalysts. Recently, a room temperature synthesis of surfactant-free gold nanoparticles has been documented (Chem. Mater. 2023, 35, 5, 2173) that requires only water, a base such as NaOH, an alcohol and HAuCl4. Unfortunately, the syntheses of nanomaterials are often sensitive to multiple parameters and it is well acknowledged that reproducibility is a general challenge in the chemical sciences, where the synthesis of nanomaterials is no exception. Here, we investigate the effect of the water conductivity and solvent grade on the surfactant-free low temperature (ca. 30 °C) synthesis of colloidal gold nanoparticles obtained in alkaline mixtures of ethanol and water. The synthesis can be performed with relatively low-grade ethanol but requires high purity water. The importance of water with low conductivity is also stressed for syntheses where ethylene glycol and glycerol are used as source of reducing agents. The results of this study over 100 samples pave the way to greener, more controlled and scalable syntheses of surfactant-free gold nanomaterials.

Starch Sodium Octenylsuccinate as a New Type of Stabilizer in the Synthesis of Catalytically Active Gold Nanostructures

Here, starch derivatives, i.e., sodium starch octenylsuccinate (OSA starch, hereinafter referred to as OSA), were employed as both reducing and stabilizing agents for the unique, inexpensive, and simple synthesis of gold nanoparticles (OSA-AuNPs) in an aqueous solution with gold salt. The obtained OSA-AuNPs were characterized by UV-vis spectrophotometry, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The catalytic activity of the obtained gold colloids was studied in the reduction of organic dyes, including methylene blue (C.I. Basic Blue 9) and rhodamine B (C.I. Basic Violet 10), and food coloring, including tartrazine (E102) and azorubine (E122), by sodium borohydride. Moreover, OSA-AuNPs were utilized as signal amplifiers in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. The obtained results confirmed that gold nanoparticles can be used as effective catalysts in reduction reactions of selected organic dyes, as well as signal enhancers in the SERS technique.

Unraveling the Mechanism of the Brust-Schiffrin Formation of Au25(SR)18 through Mass Spectrometry.

The Brust-Schiffrin (BS) method for gold nanoparticle (Au NP) synthesis is celebrated for its ability to produce highly monodisperse NPs from toluene-water solutions, in contrast to aqueous methods, such as the Turkevich method. Despite the method's success, the actual formation mechanisms remain largely unknown due to difficulty in studying the intermediates with species-differentiating techniques such as mass spectrometry (MS) or nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The issue lies in the use of solvents poorly compatible with these techniques and the difficulty in differentiating useful intermediate species from side products and impurities in such one-pot reactions. Herein, we use our recently formulated fully aqueous BS reaction to study the formation mechanisms. MS is chiefly employed to capture the intermediate species, and the Au25(SR)18 nanocluster is used as a thermodynamically reliable end-point. We find that the BS method may comprise a unilateral complex-shedding stage in addition to the known thiol-etching stage.

Effect of Thermo- and pH-Sensitive Block Copolymer Structure and Composition on the Synthesis and Stabilization of Gold Nanoparticles.

Homopolymers of poly[N-(2-(diethylamino)ethyl) acrylamide] exhibit the ability to adsorb onto the surface of preformed or growing gold nanoparticles. The resulting hybrid materials possess a pH and thermo-sensitive nature. Consequently, their optical properties can be modulated by manipulating either the temperature or the pH. Moreover, introducing monomers based on poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) into block or random statistical polymers enables further modulation of the thermosensitive properties. These copolymers, employed for the in-situ synthesis and/or stabilization of gold nanoparticles, lead to hybrid materials whose properties and/or particle size depend on the polymer composition and microstructure: statistical polymers emerge as superior stabilizing agents compared to their block counterparts at a constant composition.

Gold Nanoparticle Synthesis and its Mode of Action as an Effective Therapy against Breast Carcinoma: Analysis of Traditional Methods and their Comparison with New Methods

Abstract: Breast cancer is one of the most widespread and lethal malignancies afflicting females globally. The global incidence of breast cancer is on the rise, with an anticipated 4.4 million cases by 2070. Notably, breast cancer constitutes approximately 25% of all cancer diagnoses. In the realm of biomedical sciences, nanotechnology has ushered in a transformative era, particularly in cancer therapy and diagnostics. Nanoparticles offer the capability to tailor specific sizes, with elevated surface-to-volume ratios proving advantageous for drug distribution by ensuring a substantial medicines loading volume. Gold nanoparticles exhibit a remarkable selectivity for cancer cells, primarily attributed to the heightened permeability and retaining effects. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of gold nanoparticles in breast cancer therapy, comparing them with traditional techniques from previous research and elucidating their mechanism of action. Data for analysis were sourced from various platforms, including Web of Science and Google Scholar, comprising previously published information. Analysis revealed that historical studies employed conventional techniques for breast cancer therapy. However, contemporary approaches now favor nanomedicine, incorporating diverse drugs and delivery systems, surpassing traditional methods. In summary, nanomedicine emerges as an exceptionally effective mode of breast cancer treatment when juxtaposed with conventional approaches. Previous research also underscores the efficacy of gold nanoparticles as a viable treatment modality. Currently, a spectrum of nanomedicines, including gold nanoparticles, serves as a promising avenue for suppressing tumor development in breast cancer patients

Synthesized Gold Nanoparticles with Moringa Oleifera leaf Extract Induce Mitotic Arrest (G2/M phase) and Apoptosis in Dalton's Lymphoma Cells.

The therapeutic potential of chemically synthesized AuNPs has been demonstrated in various types of cancer. However, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) synthesized using typical chemical methods have concerns regarding their environmental safety and adverse impact on human well-being. To overcome this issue, we used an environmentally friendly approach in which gold nanoparticles were synthesized using Moringa oleifera leaf extract (MLE). The present research was mainly focused on the biosynthesis and characterization of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) using Moringa oleifera leaf extract (MLE-AuNPs) and explore its anticancer potential against Dalton's Lymphoma (DL) cells. Characterization of the MLE-AuNPs was conducted using UV-Vis Spectroscopy to confirm the reduction process, FTIR analysis to ascertain the presence of functional groups, and XRD analysis to confirm the crystallinity. SEM and TEM images were used to examine size and morphology. After characterization, MLE-AuNPs were evaluated for their cytotoxic effects on Dalton's lymphoma cells, and the results showed an IC50 value of 75 ± 2.31 µg/mL; however, there was no discernible cytotoxicity towards normal murine thymocytes. Furthermore, flow cytometric analysis revealed G2/M phase cell cycle arrest mediated by the downregulation of cyclin B1 and Cdc2 and upregulation of p21. Additionally, apoptosis induction was evidenced by Annexin V Staining, accompanied by modulation of apoptosis-related genes including decreased Bcl-2 expression and increased expression of Bax, Cyt-c, and Caspase-3 at both the mRNA and protein levels. Collectively, our findings underscore the promising anti-cancer properties of MLE-AuNPs, advocating their potential as a novel therapeutic avenue for Dalton's lymphoma.

Unlocking the potential of Opuntia species mucilage in chemistry

Herein, we describe a detailed protocol to extract the mucilage from different species of the genus Opuntia spp. (i.e., Opuntia Ficus (OFi), Opuntia Dillenii (ODi) and Opuntia Robusta (ORo)). The extracted mucilage was characterized by NMR, FTIR-ATR, HPLC, and TGA. OFi was found to have the highest phenolic content, 7.84 ± 1.93 mg catechol/g mucilage. The mucilage from the three species were characterized by having a high content of monosaccharides, being mannose and glucose the most abundant components (ca. 48–73 % and 23–35 %, respectively). In the context of biomass revalorization, the mucilage was proven to serve as a reducing and stabilizing agent in the synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNP/mucilage). The synthesis was optimized with a mucilage concentration of 2 mg/mL using 12.5 μL of KAuCl4 and was carried out at 80 °C for 90 min. This protocol afforded spherical nanoparticles with an average size of 9.7 ± 4.0 nm that were stable for at least 14 days, as demonstrated by TEM. Synthesized AuNP/mucilage was evaluated as a plasmonic catalyst for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol as model reaction, showing a considerable enhancement in its kapp of 97 % under white light and a decrease of 24.8 % in its activation energy.

Green synthesis and characterization of gold nanoparticles from discarded computer PCBs on reduction of environmental pollution

The economic value of gold content in electronic waste, particularly waste printed circuit boards (PCBs), has generated interest in recovering gold from this material. Unfortunately, due to the severe environmental hazards associated with such waste, there is a pressing need for efficient and selective methods of gold nanoparticle recovery. A novel technique has been developed to synthesize gold nanoparticles that employ chlorate leaching and Punica granatum extract to minimize the environmental impact of electronic waste. Multiple analytical methods, including UV-Vis, XRD, EDS, SEM, and TEM analysis, were utilized to identify and characterize the extracted gold nanoparticles. The UV-Vis spectrum showed GNP-absorption peaks at a narrow range of wavelengths, primarily at 520 nm, confirming the formation of gold nanoparticles from the e-waste. The XRD analysis identified the material as metallic gold with characteristic peaks of gold crystals (111), (200), (220), and (311), corresponding to the FCC crystal structure. The SEM and TEM analysis revealed that most of the Au nanoparticles were less than 40 nm in size, with some larger particles resulting from the agglomeration of smaller ones. The EDS spectrum analysis indicated that the gold atoms emitted strong signals. At the same time, other elements such as carbon, oxygen, and metals such as Sn, Zn, Pd, Cu, and Cd showed weaker signals. The recovered gold nanoparticles were found to have a bandgap of 2.2 eV, indicating that they are a direct bandgap semiconductor suitable for use in optoelectronic applications. The environmental impact of the PCBs and the chemicals used in the process were also analyzed to address the necessity of using discarded electronic waste to reduce environmental pollution. The proposed method showed high efficiency for extracting gold nanoparticles from e-waste, with simple process steps, low chemical usage, and low cost, as demonstrated by the results.

Nanostructured systems based on pluronics to carry gold nanoparticles and methylene blue aiming for multimodal therapy

The rise of multidrug-resistant microorganisms has become a cause of concern in the biomedical field. In this sense, this study focuses on the development of an effective treatment for infectious diseases mediated by Multimodal Therapy, combining Photodynamic Therapy (PDT), and Photothermal Therapy (PTT). The system involves the synthesis and stabilization of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in Pluronic® micelles of F-127 and P-84, combined with the Methylene Blue (MB) aiming effects against microorganisms. It is noteworthy that the AuNPs were synthesized in situ in the copolymer using the solid dispersion technique. These copolymers were strategically chosen for evaluation purposes with our study involving P-123 previously published in this journal. Thus, the effect of the length of the PEO and PPO blocks can be delineated concerning the synthesis of AuNPs. In this case, copolymer F127 has PPO blocks identical to P-123 while P-84 has PEO blocks compatible with P-123. Characterization of the formulations included electronic absorption spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, and transmission electron microscopy. Fluorescence quenching studies by Stern Volmer plots indicated the location of the MB in the hydrophilic corona of the micelles. In general, was verified that reducing the PEO/PPO ratio favors the formation of AuNPs, possibly due to the greater number of reducing sites per unit mass of the polymer. The formulations remained stable for at least 15 days, and photothermal studies showed a temperature increase of at least 11 °C. The photothermal effect proved reversible after three heating–cooling cycles, revealing a synergy between MB and AuNPs in heat generation, hindered by increased irradiance and rapid photobleaching of MB. The in vitro susceptibility tests with Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus demonstrated effective inhibition of the microorganisms. The result shows that AuNPs for itself do not affect the fungal/bacteria lineage. However, the MB/AuNPs combination samples, showed excellent fungal and bacterial inhibition at low drug concentrations.

Gold nanoparticles-doped MXene heterostructure for ultrasensitive electrochemical detection of fumonisin B1 and ampicillin.

Early transition metal carbides (MXene) hybridized by precious metals open a door for innovative electrochemical biosensing device design. Herein, we present a facile one-pot synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs)-doped two-dimensional (2D) titanium carbide MXene nanoflakes (Ti3C2Tx/Au). Ti3C2Tx MXene exhibits high electrical conductivity and yields synergistic signal amplification in conjunction with AuNPs leading to excellent electrochemical performance. Thus Ti3C2Tx/Au hybrid nanostructure can be used as an electrode platform for the electrochemical analysis of various targets. We used screen-printed electrodes modified with the Ti3C2Tx/Au electrode and functionalized with different biorecognition elements to detect and quantify an antibiotic, ampicillin (AMP), and a mycotoxin, fumonisin B1 (FB1). The ultralow limits of detection of 2.284pM and 1.617pg.mL-1, which we achieved respectively for AMP and FB1 are far lower than their corresponding maximum residue limits of 2.8nM in milk and 2 to 4mgkg-1 in corn products for human consumption set by the United States Food and Drug Administration. Additionally, the linear range of detection and quantification of AMP and FB1 were, respectively, 10pM to 500nM and 10pgmL-1 to 1µgmL-1. The unique structure and excellent electrochemical performance of Ti3C2Tx/Au nanocomposite suggest that it is highly suitable for anchoring biorecognition entities such as antibodies and oligonucleotides for monitoring various deleterious contaminants in agri-food products.

Synthesis and toxicity assessment of Coffea arabica extract-derived gold nanoparticles loaded with doxorubicin in lung cancer cell cultures.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide, despite the many treatments available, cancer patients face side effects that reduce their quality of life. Therefore, there is a need to develop novel strategies to increase the efficacy of treatments. In this study, gold nanoparticles obtained by green synthesis with Coffea arabica green bean extract were loaded with Doxorubicin, (a highly effective but non-specific drug) by direct interaction and using commercial organic ligands that allow colloidal dispersion at physiological and tumor pH. Conjugation of these components resulted in stable nanohybrids at physiological pH and a tumor pH release dependent, with a particle size less than 40nm despite having the ligands and Doxorubicin loaded on their surface, which gave them greater specificity and cytotoxicity in H69 tumor cells.

Exploring dielectric properties and polarization relaxation processes in ionic liquid crystals with synthesized carbon and gold nanoparticles

The main goal is to study the structural and dielectric characteristics of advanced composite materials based on ionic metal alkanoates with various types of nanoparticles. The matrix Cd+2(C7H15COO)−2 formed as a result of the reaction of cadmium with the carboxylate groups of alkanoate (C7H15COO)−2 is used for the synthesis of nanoparticles. At room temperature, the matrix of the ionic crystalline material represents multilayer structure with each layer thickness of 1.8 nm. However, when heated in the temperature range from 100 °C to 180 °C, the matrix undergoes a phase transition into the liquid crystalline smectic A phase, preserved after cooling to room temperature. This transition opens up possibilities for the synthesis of carbon and gold nanoparticles. The temperature treatments of the matrix allow to control of the size and shape of nanoparticles during synthesis and create highly stable nanocomposites. The structural features and dielectric properties of these nanocomposites are studied using transmission electron microscopy, enabling to determine of the sizes of nanoparticles and their dispersion and impedance spectroscopy, respectively. Dielectric properties of nanocomposite materials were studied at different temperatures corresponding to two material phases. We carried out an analysis of the dielectric characteristics of the pure matrix in comparison with nanocomposite materials, containing carbon and gold nanoparticles to identify the role of the nanoparticles. Based on our experimental data, we proposed a model to explain the charge transfer process, taking into account relaxation processes and polarization of nanocomposite materials.

Green synthesis of Nyctanthes arbor-tristis flower-decorated gold nanoparticles: Sustainable approaches for enhancing antimicrobial and supercapacitor performance

The physiochemical and electrochemical characteristics of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) produced by phytosynthesis technique at varying concentrations of Nyctanthes arbor-tristis flower (NAF) are presented in this study. The final porous carbon decorated AuNPs have possible applications in antibacterial research as well as energy storage field. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies revealed tiny spherical shaped nanoparticles, and UV–visible spectroscopy showed size-dependent optical properties. Significant antibacterial efficacy against Pseudomonas aeruginosa was shown by the NAF-derived AuNPs. A symmetric supercapacitor with 64 F g−1 specific capacitance at 1 A g−1 and 97% cycling stability after 5000 charge-discharge cycles was produced using the as-synthesized electrode. This study provides a sustainable method for producing multifunctional nanomaterials by highlighting the potential of NAF-derived AuNPs for dual applications in the antibacterial and supercapacitor areas.

Synergistic effect of gold nanoparticles decorated functionalized carbon nanotubes nanohybrids on the thermal, dielectric, and sensing properties of polyaniline ternary nanocomposites

AbstractThe synthesis of gold nanoparticles reinforced functionalized single‐walled/multi‐walled carbon nanotubes nanohybrid based polyaniline nanocomposites were carried out using in situ polymerization. The chemical interaction and nanostructured morphology of the synthesized nanocomposites are studied using ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, x‐ray diffraction analysis, x‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and field emission scanning electron microscopy. Thermal stability of synthesized PANI/Au@f‐SWNTs is boosted by a magnitude of 30°C as compared with the pristine PANI matrix, which is attributed to a strong barrier effect because of the development of tortuous path that resulted from a uniform distribution of Au@f‐CNTs throughout the PANI matrix. For PANI/Au@f‐SWNTs, the AC conductivity and dielectric permittivity are improved by a value of 83.58 S/cm and 1.35 × 10−5 as well as the dielectric loss is reduced by a factor of 0.11 in comparison with the pure PANI matrix at an applied frequency of 106 Hz. PANI/Au@f‐SWNTs and PANI/Au@f‐MWNTs ternary nanocomposites exhibited excellent selectivity toward the hazardous Cr(VI) heavy metal ions in an aqueous medium with a limit of detection of 0.74 and 0.89 μM with a binding constant of 1.028 × 105 and 3.46 × 104 M−1, respectively, that can be selective and sensitive for the detection of Cr(VI) metal ions in water at trace level.

Development of CuO Nanoparticles from the Mucus of Garden Snail Cornu aspersum as New Antimicrobial Agents.

Several biologically active compounds involved in the green synthesis of silver and gold nanoparticles have been isolated from snail mucus and characterized. This paper presents a successful method for the application of snail mucus from Cornu aspersum as a bioreducing agent of copper sulfate and as a biostabilizer of the copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs-Muc) obtained. The synthesis at room temperature and neutral pH yielded nanoparticles with a spherical shape and an average diameter of 150 nm. The structure and properties of CuONPs-Muc were characterized using various methods and techniques, such as ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), one-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (1D-PAGE), up-conversion infrared spectroscopy Fourier transform (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), Raman spectroscopy and imaging, thermogravimetric analysis (TG-DSC), etc. Mucus proteins with molecular weights of 30.691 kDa and 26.549 kDa were identified, which are involved in the biogenic production of CuONPs-Muc. The macromolecular shell of proteins formed around the copper ions contributes to a higher efficiency of the synthesized CuONPs-Muc in inhibiting the bacterial growth of several Gram-positive (Bacillus subtilis NBIMCC2353, Bacillus spizizenii ATCC 6633, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, Listeria innocua NBIMCC8755) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli ATCC8739, Salmonella enteitidis NBIMCC8691, Salmonella typhimurium ATCC 14028, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia ATCC 17666) bacteria compared to baseline mucus. The bioorganic synthesis of snail mucus presented here provides CuONPs-Muc with a highly pronounced antimicrobial effect. These results will expand knowledge in the field of natural nanomaterials and their role in emerging dosage forms.

Shining insights: Deciphering the biogenic synthesis of Ajuga bracteosa-mediated gold nanoparticles with advanced microscopy techniques.

In this study, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were bioreduced from Ajuga bracteosa, a medicinal herb known for its therapeutic properties against various diseases. Different fractions of the plant extract were used, including the methanolic fraction (ABMF), the n-hexane fraction (ABHF), the chloroform fraction (ABCF), and the aqueous extract for AuNPs synthesis. The characterization of AuNPs was performed using UV-Vis spectrophotometry, FT-IR, XRD, EDX, and TEM. UV-Vis spectroscopy confirmed the formation of AuNPs, with peaks observed at 555 nm. FT-IR analysis indicated strong capping of phytochemicals on the surface of AuNPs, which was supported by higher total phenolic contents (TPC) and total flavonoid contents (TFC) in AuNPs. XRD results showed high crystallinity and a smaller size distribution of AuNPs. TEM analysis revealed the spherical shape of AuNPs, with an average size of 29 ± 10 nm. The biologically synthesized AuNPs exhibited superior antibacterial, antioxidant, and cytotoxic activities compared to the plant extract fractions. The presence of active biomolecules in A. bracteosa, such as neoclerodan flavonol glycosides, diterpenoids, phytoecdysone, and iridoid glycosides, contributed to the enhanced biological activities of AuNPs. Overall, this research highlights the potential of A. bracteosa-derived AuNPs for various biomedical applications due to their remarkable therapeutic properties and effective capping by phytochemicals. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: This research underscores the growing significance of herbal medicine in contemporary healthcare by exploring the therapeutic potential of Ajuga bracteosa and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The study highlights the notable efficacy of A. bracteosa leaf extracts and AuNPs in treating bacterial infections, demonstrating their bactericidal effects on a range of strains. The anti-inflammatory properties of plant extracts and nanoparticles are evidenced through paw edema method suggesting their applicability in managing inflammatory conditions. These findings position A. bracteosa and AuNPs as potential candidates for alternative and effective approaches to modern medication.

Hollow Polyethyleneimine Nanoparticles with Drug Loaded DNA for Chemotherapeutic Applications.

The next generation of anticancer agents are emerging from rationally designed nanostructured materials. This work involved the synthesis and characterization of novel hollow DNA-conjugated gold nanoparticles (DNA-AuNPs) for controlled drug delivery. Polyethyleneimine (PEI) was bound to AuNPs, forming polymer-shell nanoparticles. Dissolution of the gold core via iodine formed hollow core polymeric nanoparticles (HCPNPs) and a high density (85 molecules/particle) of DNA intercalated with daunorubicin was conjugated. Particles were spherical with an average diameter of 105.7 ± 17.3 nm and zeta potential of 20.4 ± 3.54 mV. We hypothesize the DNA backbone electrostatically condensed to the primary amines on the surface of the particle toroidally, weaving itself within the polymer shell. During the DNA intercalation process, increasing the ionic concentration and decreasing the amine/phosphate ratio 10-fold increased drug intercalation 64% and 61%, respectively, allowing us to determine the optimal method of particle synthesis. As intercalation sites increased with increasing DNA strand length, drug loading increased. An average of 874 ± 40.1 daunorubicin molecules were loaded per HCPNP. HCPNPs with drug intercalated DNA have strong potential to be clinically efficacious drug delivery vehicles due to the versatility of DNA and high drug loading capacities.

Synthesis of multifunctional silver oxide, zinc oxide, copper oxide and gold nanoparticles for enhanced antibacterial activity against ESKAPE pathogens and antioxidant, anticancer activities using Momordica cymbalaria seed extract

Rising emergence in public health due to antibiotic-resistant of ESKAPE pathogens, diseases related to oxidative damage and cancer has driven the urgent need to develop potent therapeutics for resistant bacterial strains, free radical scavenging and cancer. The present study involves Momordica cymbalaria seed extracts mediated synthesis of metal nanoparticles and to evaluate its ameliorative potency against ESKAPE pathogens, free radicals and cancer cells. The study includes therapeutic approaches to target pathogenic biofilms relating phyto-therapeutics with nanotechnology. In the present investigation, we have synthesized four metal oxide nanoparticles of Silver, Zinc, Copper (Ag2O, ZnO and CuO), and Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) using the seed extracts of M. cymbalaria. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by various biophysical techniques like X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HR-TEM) with Selected Area Electron Diffraction (SAED). Agar well diffusion methods, or Antimicrobial methods (MIC, MBC, and MBIC), DPPH/ABTS free radical scavenging assay, MTT/apoptotic studies and protein/DNA damage inhibition assays were performed to evaluate the antibacterial, anticancer and antioxidant activities. Crystalline properties of metal oxides NPs were established by XRD pattern and the presence of alcohol or phenol, ketone, and amine groups in M. cymbalaria seed was confirmed by FTIR analysis. That participates in the reduction of Ag+, Cu+, Zn+, and Au+ ions to NPs. All the nanoparticles showed dose-dependent antibacterial, anticancer and antioxidant activity. Protein and DNA oxidation inhibition assays demonstrated an efficient quenching effect of proxy radicals by all the NPs. Therefore, M. cymbalaria -mediated synthesis of metal NPs can be used as an alternative to toxic physical or chemically mediated synthesis that can be applied to develop multifunctional nanoparticles as efficient therapeutics.
